Prince Caspian: My reflection

Okay. So I'm way too late for Narnia's second installment? You bet I am. But I'm not about to give a critique of the film. I stand by my conviction that every film is beautiful so long as its creators devoted time, strength and love to it. This is my conviction and you can't change it.

Anyway, I was moved to blog about a particular scene that struck a cord in my heart. This was the part when Peter stood at the bridge of the enemy's castle, watching a number of his soldiers behind the iron gates being slaughtered by their foe.

What supposed to be a surprise attack to regain the throne for the rightful heir turned against the Narnians. The plan started out smoothly but several miscalculations led to a devastating defeat at the end of the battle.

As Peter stood there, torn between his people and duty as high king, I remembered the verse, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."

In the earlier scenes, the young king was asked by his sister, Lucy, "Why are you doing this exactly?," referring to Peter's rash decisions. Then came a line that reminded me of Israel's hard hearts and disobedience, and also of my own sinfulness and wretchedness, "Or have you forgotten who really defeated the White Witch...?"

It is so easy for man to trust in himself and disregard the Living God. This is true in Israel's experience and very true in mine. In Prince Caspian, we witness the consequence of this stubborn pride-- utter defeat, failure and even death. In our lives as Christians, the consequences may not be as severe but a question remains, "Should we wait for grave events before we remember our dependence on God?"

I believe we know the answer.
